J. Michael Shea, J.D., Ph.D., is Tax Counsel to The Stanley-Laman Group and is based in Tampa, Florida. Michael provides legal services to the firm's clients with Florida residency, advising on Florida estate planning, asset protection, and civil litigation matters.
Many of the firm's clients maintain dual residency between Pennsylvania and Florida. Michael serves as local Florida counsel for these clients on Florida homestead law, Florida probate procedure, asset protection, and the estate planning questions that multi-state residency raises, and gives them access to a Florida-licensed attorney.
Michael is a Professor of Law at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School's Tampa Bay campus. He is Director of St. Michael's Legal Center for Women and Children, a pro bono legal clinic that assists underserved communities with family law, estate planning, and civil matters. He is also legal officer for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Florida west coast operations, overseeing legal matters for approximately 650 members across 20 stations.
Michael brings decades of experience in civil litigation and legal education to his work. He is admitted to practice law in Florida.
